| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Andrei Konchalovsky's expansive television mini-series production of Homer's epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour, but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus (strikingly played by Armand Assante) and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home, this film turns into a fantastical adventure. Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design, Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe (Bernadette Peters) to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus (Eric Roberts). Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide, the goddess Athena, with Greta Scacchi as Odysseus's faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso. The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin, Jeroen Krabbé, Christopher Lee, and Irene Papas. The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean, making for a lush, lovely visual experience. --Sean Axmaker

Great Service April 28, 2008 D. Dunn (Bham, AL) My son needed this video to watch for a suppliment to reading the book in his English class. I paid a little extra on shipping. I ordered it on Thursday afternoon and had it in had Friday for him to watch over the weekend. Great service!
Kill the Flutesman! April 24, 2008 matt mc (Monroe, LA) The most baffling thing about movie interpretations of literary classics is the bizarre mishandling of dialogue. Lines of dialogue are spoken out of their proper context, and therefore have no meaning. The "Nohbdy" joke is completely ruined by the way the Cyclops scene is played. The second most baffling thing is the alteration of plot points for no good reason. Why, in this version, do they have Poseidon cursing Odysseus for his pride, rather than for harming Polyphemus. That makes the entire Cyclops scene meaningless.
Other bizarre things:
1. Hector (not unlike Darth Vader) apparently has a personal PA system with a microphone inside his helmet. 2. Odysseus was Italian. 3. Aeolus was an effiminate New Yorker fashion critic. 4. Somebody needed to throw the flute player overboard.
Great Movie!!! April 9, 2008 Curtis Brunelle (Central New York) This is an awsome movie if you are into Mythology! it is both happy and tragic. I highly recommend this DVD!!!!

classroom use March 27, 2008 E. Walker (Michigan) I don't show all parts, but it is a nice compliment to my 7th graders reading of the Odyeesy. They really enjoy it. Some parts are not suitable for 7th graders, so I use the disk menu to skip around. I found it a nice supplement to my teaching.
