Amazon.com Interval workouts incorporate a variety of activities that are powerful and short in duration. These intervals create an anaerobic workout that forces the body to adjust to variations of intensity and motion. Interval training has the real potential to burn fat and build strength. The Firm: Body Sculpting Basics utilizes these same aerobic and anaerobic components to create a 60-minute workout that promotes strength and stamina. Instructor Susan Harris presents simple dance-style aerobic combinations and weightlifting techniques that are sure to make you break a sweat. This video is somewhat dated (lots of '80s-style leg warmers and traditional dance aerobic movements), but the content is so stellar that it would more appropriately be coined as a fitness classic. Pliés, squats, and split-leg lunges work the major muscles of the lower body, while lateral raises, curls, and push-ups concentrate on the upper body. Light weights (5 to 8 pounds) are used throughout this workout, and a set of ankle weights may be helpful if you are looking for a challenge. Cueing comes quickly and Harris does not give much information on form or body alignment. Therefore, beginners should watch the informational portion of this video (the segment immediately before the workout) in order to train as confidently and safely as possible. This is a brilliantly designed program that merges weight training and cardio in an effective and approachable (not to mention quick) package. --Olivia Voigts

Best lower body shaper! May 12, 2008 I have all of the new and all of the classic videos. By far, if you want a great workout dont wast your money on the new videos, spend it on completing your classic firm collection. This workout is so tough, but it gets easier. And when it does add more weights. Would definatly recommend to beginers to advanced.[...]
Best Workout EVER! April 22, 2008 D. Preston (Boston area) I started working out with Jane Fonda at 20 years old after having my first child, and between her tape and Richard Simmons, I got back into shape. Shortly thereafter, I discovered Susan Harris's Total Body workout, I couldn't believe how difficult it was! I have continued using this tape now for about 25 years and even compared to all the new workouts (including Tae-Bo) and including personal training at the gym, I can honestly say that this workout is still one of the most challenging workouts I've done! I try and do it once a week mixed in with other workouts, and it definitely does the trick! It's old and a little hokey, but it's effective! I wish they would put it on DVD!
THE BEST April 18, 2008 Frances Biafore-gailfoil (OKEECHOBEE, FLA USA) I BOUGHT MY FIRST "FIRM" TAPE IN 1986, WHEN IT COST $60.00. I WAS SO IMPRESSED, I BOUGHT 6 MORE TO GIVE TO MY KIDS AND RELATIVES. I HAVE BOUGHT OVER 100 EXERCISE TAPES OVER THE YEARS BUT THEY DON'T COMPARE TO "THE FIRM" AS FAR AS RESULTS AND FUN. VOLUME I, 2, 3, 4, AND 5 ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! AND THIS ONE IS THE BEST OF ALL. I WORE OUT THE ORIGINAL ONE I BOUGHT. THAT'S WHY I NEEDED THIS ONE
still the best! April 15, 2008 N. Hughes (sacramento, ca) after having tried several other workouts, this is still my favorite. 22 years later its still the best!!!
Best floor work ever done in a Firm tape April 12, 2008 E. M. Lawton This was one of my first Firm purchases, many moons ago. It is considered a classic for good reason. The box desciption says it calls for light weights, but you'll probably need a full range of weights from 3-20lb. dumbbells to get the most out of this workout.
It is quite dated now, but as an 80's fan, I don't mind that. It doesn't take away from the workout's effectiveness or fun. The music is motivating. Susan Harris used to be known as "The Iron Goddess" in Firm circles, and she earned the title. Her experience shines through in this performance. She is strong, flexible, and has impeccable form. She obviously has a great rapport with her class, and taught this workout for months before taping it. So she really knows what you're thinking and feeling while you're working out.
You start with a fairly long warm-up. I will say that this an 80's style aerobics beginning, and you do need to watch your back and knees on some of these moves. That said, it is far safer than most of the workouts produced around the same time, by other manufacturers. After the warm-up, you do about 20 minutes of aerobic weight-training. Watch your form- it is easy to hurt your back if you don't perform this with precision(I speak from experience). Then it's on to a longgggggggg floor work segment(about 30 minutes). She includes push-ups, a ton of tablework(the best the Firm ever did, IMO), pec flies, bridge work, inner and outer thigh leg lifts, and ab work. it's tough. Even the fittest amongst us would have to be challenged by this floor work. Susan has some of the best legs I've ever seen, and this workout does more for the thighs and butt than you could ever imagine. The floor work alone is worth purchasing the tape. Finally, you have a stretch. It's all challenging, but Susan keeps it moving well.
This was released on DVD a few years ago, so if you can find it and don't mind an 80's look and feel to your workouts, go for it. A great workout, when used with a little caution.
