A good wizard finds his magical powers diminishing as this Rankin/Bass production based on the Peter Dickinson novel opens. His nemesis, the evil Ommadon (voiced by James Earl Jones at his deepest and scariest), swiftly takes advantage of the situation. Who will save the world? Why, none other than a young scientist-novelist-game inventor, named Peter Dickenson (mildly voiced by John Ritter), who is zapped from the future back into the time of dragons. Populating this Japanese-animation fantasy film are the titular fire-breathing dragons, the wizards, a knight, a maiden, some elves, and--in a feminist departure from tradition--a heroic bowwoman. The battles are fairly mild and most of the virtuous characters recover, making this a good choice for family viewing, as well as a staple for the fantasy fanatic's video library. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars dvd please   September 30, 2008

This movie, The Last Unicorn and the Phantom Tollbooth were my favorite movies as a child. Only one is out on DVD. Unfortunately it's not this one. I know the company is making a killing on the last unicorn. This one would very easily match it. If the DVD gods are reading this please, please, please put it out on DVD! I promise to buy at least 3 copies.

5 out of 5 stars " ... by heavens, why isn't this film out on dvd!!!!!"   July 4, 2008

I am wondering why The Flight of Dragons (1982 animated film) with such a voice cast as James Earl Jones, John Ritter and Harry Morgan to name a few, with a fantastic soundtrack by Maury Laws and visual animation which has stood the test of time as something truly impressive and captivating, has not been released on to dvd, not even in America, why is this? The video was released by Warner Bros in 1999, why haven't they not ventured to try a dvd release? There is obviously a large following on the internet, You Tube has had frequent postings with clips from the film and even pirate copies have been sold and are on sale on ebay, how can this be allowed? This film has even been praised by Hayao Miyazaki yet no release has been presented, not even for a short period to satisfy demand. I cannot help but think there is some reason unbeknownst to me as to why this film has not been released. It isn't the quality of the animation which was intriguing as it does vary in quality but the ideas are what made it so interesting, the notion of the imaginative world, the world of the spirit being usurped by the laws of logic, these are fascinating concepts for children and tie in with further intellectual debates as to mans place in the universe and how he grapples in coming to terms with his/her consciousness. This film has been over looked too long now and deserves a straight forward dvd release, at the very least.

ITS HERE! The DVD version of this movie has finally been released from Warner Home Video. Amazon doesn't appear to have it yet, but I just bought it from a different website "Rare DVD Classics _ com" for $19. I have been waiting years for this movie to come out. Now my son of 7 years will be able to enjoy it hopefully as much as I did when I was a kid.

5 out of 5 stars DVD Release PLEASE!!   January 10, 2008

This is one of my favorite animated films from childhood. Along with such fantasy classics as The Last Unicorn and The Hobbit, The Flight of Dragons brings back the nostalgia of the love of fantasy from the 80s. Hopefully a DVD format will be released SOON!

5 out of 5 stars Give Birth to this DVD   August 14, 2007

I have a hunch the DVD will be made available outside the US but wherever I have to go to get a high quality copy. The VHS I own is faded. I saw it years ago as a teenager by channel surfing and took note and for the longest time I couldn't even find it in the video stores. Released back in 82' at a time when Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio ruled radio. Ommedon is my all time favorite [...] next to Darth Vader.
