The Book Was MUCH Better Than The Movie!!! January 5, 2009 B. Maysonet (Bronx, New York United States) While the movie was interesting to watch, so much of the book was cut out of it, that I was left wanting more description...had I only watched the movie and not read the book, I would not have fully grasped the love Edward and Bella had for each other....read the book people...you will get so much more out of it...I will admit though...Robert Pattinson is very handsome and makes a very sexy Edward! =0)
Twelve year old bliss+pretty british actor+terrible director=Farce of the Twilight series. January 4, 2009 rockr90 (Chicago) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Book to movie adaptations have always received a bad rap for being inaccurate or different. It's almost expected. And, in defense of the direction and the movie production team, sometimes you cannot always fit everything into the movie that made it into the book. For a number of reasons, really, like cutting things in the interest of time, leaving out characters, ignoring unimportant sub-plots, etc. Fine. I understand. So there's semi-decent, willing-to-overlook-it book to movie films that we've all seen and deemed as mediocre. Not so with Twilight. Even with the English language, words cannot suffice in describing how terrible this movie was. But, i'll try anyway. *ahem* Twilight was the most embarrasing, pathetic, poorly-written, poorly-directed, thrown together film i have ever seen in my entire life. The movie was so bad that it almost became a satire of itself. Which, i have to say, must be the first time in history a serious drama thriller has achieved that. But i digress. I take issue first with Rob Pattinson cast as Edward. The "actor" brought nothing big to the screen other than a ridiculous chorus of tweens drooling over themselves for his grungy, heartthrob looks, and a massive forehead that had to be cut short in many scenes, so as not to block out the rest of the shot. Pattinson's acting was shallow, unbelievable, and delivered no emotion. In the book, Edward comes across as sexy, genuine, and mysterious. In the film, Pattinson came across as odd, awkward, and creepy. Instead of being a dynamic charachter with alot of emotional depth, he was only angry or brooding. And on top of it all, i'm tempted to make a drinking game out of how many times his fake american accent slips up. As for kristen stewart; she became pattinson's exact female counterpart, except for the fact that she fits the charachter visually. Her acting was cold, unfeeling, and annoying at best. Her whiny, pathetic protests and intrigues made her out to be more of a damsel in distress than a strong-willed, witty character like Bella. Her relationship with her father did nothing to mirror that of the relationship in the book, where Bella was caring and had a decent and loving relationship with Charlie. in the film, she was more of a bratty teen, sent to live with her father after it didn't work out between mommy and daddy, like something from countless disney films. My favorite parts of the film, however, were when pattinson and stewart were together. Why? because i got a great laugh. Their chemistry, or lack thereof, was pathetic. I often found myself cringing at their blatantly weak dialogue exchange on account of how awkward it was. And, the infamous kiss scene in Bella's room was so awkward, that i found i had to look away, as not to spook the actors, like something in a zoo. PATHETIC. This film ended up being a two-hour long soap opera, with similar acting skill to boot. Although, i do have to say, i would rather watch Days of our Lives than have to sit through this farce of a film again. Being a fan of the books, i feel that this film was a severe rip off to the fans, and the author, and could have been five hundred times the movie it was. My suggestion? Actors who act. I was very "aware" that i was watching them act, not getting sucked into the story. But, i do have to say; being an alternative and indie rock junkie, the soundtrack was pretty good. F-!
Great movie January 3, 2009 C. Frazier (Springfield, MO) The moive followed the book very well. Although I was apprehensive about Pattinson playing Edward, after seeing the movie, it was the right choice. All the actors reflected the book's characters perfectly. Even though I'm not a teen (unless 48 can be teenage), I loved the movie & can't wait to get the DVD.
Disappointed!! Warning Spoiler!! January 3, 2009 ML 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just read Twilight for the first time in under a day. I was so surprised at how much I loved the story so I immediately went out last night and watched the movie before I had to wait for it to come out on DVD. Ten minutes in I wanted to leave for the fear that the movie would ruin the book for me. I feel that the main point of Twilight is the love that Bella and Edward find against all the odds that are against them. The movie didn't capture this at all. It breezed over the building of their relationship and went straight to them being in love and the conflict between the other vampires. If I wanted to see a story about vampires battling I would go watch Underworld (which I love by the way). I went to this movie to see the love story between Bella and Edward and was disappointed. Their fun, witty, intense, playful relationship was completely lost. Some of the most important parts of the book were barely there like the part where they hike to the field. I was a little embarrassed because I raved about the book to my husband, dragged him to the movie, and it ended up being just another bad movie that I picked. I went to the movie not expecting much because that is what Hollywood usually does to great stories. I was even more disappointed than I thought I would be. I left the movie theater a little sad actually. This could've been so good. The characters were all wrong, for example Jasper and Mike; I wasn't even a fan of Robert P who played Edward. Edward was supposed to be beautiful, cool, intense, and I don't think he was any of those things. He looked awkward as if the role was forced. There were a few times I saw his potential but overall he didn't portray Edward very well (at least the Edward I pictured). Kristen S did ok with the role but seemed to lack a lot of the emotion that Bella felt during the buildup of their relationship (confusion, lust, anger). I guess that is because they skipped over it. Overall she seemed to lack basic emotion. I thought Jacob's role was casted great along with Emmet and Billy. When Emma and Edward did give in to their love for each other (after about a day) they were steamy which is where Robert P seemed to do the best in the role. This is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. Don't go see this movie expecting much. I think I might have liked it more if I didn't read the book the day before. Hopefully the New Moon will be better with the new Director and focus the story on what it is, a love story. If I was Stephanie Meyer I would be very angry at the charade that the Director made of my beautiful story. This could've been so good. I'm still sad.
