Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Introducing the revolutionary BRK 9120 series smoke alarms which have been redesigned from the ground up. They install faster, perform better, and are even smarter than before. All of these improvements help reduce nuisance alarms and save you time and money. BRK Electronics smoke alarms are designed to be easy to install, easy to maintain, and quality-engineered for years of virtually maintenance-free service.

The 9120B AC-powered smoke alarm with battery backup includes these features:

  • Ionization sensor which helps detect fast flaming fires that consume combustible materials rapidly.
  • 120-volt AC inter-connectable (with maximum 18 compatible devices). The alarm can be interconnected with up to 12 other compatible smoke alarms and six compatible devices like bells, horns, repeaters and door closers. If one unit triggers an alarm, all smoke alarms in the series will sound. Power indicators show which unit in the series initiated the alarm.
  • Latching alarm indicator which automatically identifies which unit initiated the alarm.
  • Smart technology to reduce nuisance alarms.
  • 9-volt battery backup for peace of mind during power malfunction.
  • Single test/silence button which both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality.
  • Perfect mount system including a gasketless base for easy installation and new mounting bracket that keeps the alarm secure over a wide rotation range to allow for perfect alignment.
  • Mounting bracket lock for tamper resistance.
  • Dust cover to keep unit clean during construction.
  • 10-year limited warranty.
All BRK Electronics smoke alarms meet UL 217 standard and are listed with the California State Fire Marshal. They use the new UL mandated repeating 85-decibel alarm horn pattern. 10-year limited warranty. This unit is approved for sale in Oregon after new revisions on law HB2586.--Bree Norlander

5 out of 5 stars Warning!   November 7, 2008

Please read the reviews, this product is horrible!! Chirping at 3:30 AM for NO REASON is the norm. I've had 3 of these, new backup batteries and all, and they all fail. Go elsewhere, I am.

I purchased this to replace a broken smoke detector. This matched up perfectly with the others in service in our home and we have had no false alarms since installing.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on you BRK!!   October 28, 2008

Bought my house in 2002 and have 8 4120B's that have caused more sleepless nights than watching the Dow Jones. I have done everything suggested to keep these things from going off in the middle of the night, which is when they like to fail, with no success. After removing all of them several months ago, leaving my family exposed (shame on me), I decided to give them one more try. Yesterday, I reinstalled all 8 units with brand new batteries and....you guessed it...didn't even make it through one night. I and my family are exhausted...AGAIN! BRK - Your ears had to have been burning. Yup....they're all removed again and this time for good. I went on-line to see what others were saying and was about to buy this replacement (9120B) until I read the reviews. NO THANKS!! I will now try to find another brand with the same pin connections so I don't have to re-wire the house. Anyone know if any exist? Unbelievable that so many people can have the same issues with the same units and yet they continue to sell them to unsuspecting consumers. You obviously knew about this issue and the replacement model is no better. I hope my house doesn't burn down before I can find a workable replacement. Shame on you BRK!!
PS: The 1 star rating is only because it was the minimum required to add this review. Too bad they didn't offer a negative number of stars.

1 out of 5 stars The Day the Firemen Came - Twice   October 7, 2008

My husband was in Boston, I'm home with the children. All smoke detectors started going off. Spend 30 minutes looking for nonexistant fire. Can't get the $*%&^^$ things to stop. After 40 minutes of trying to stop the stupid things, I call the fire department - they come and find defective smoke detector in basement. Firemen leave. Twenty minutes later, smoke detectors go off again. Again, can't get the $*%&*#$ things to stop. Again call the fire department - now the one in the upstairs hall is defective.

We now have three or four missing smoke detectors. Husband just got on Amazon to replace smoke detectors. He calls me in here to read all of the negative reviews because he thinks they are funny. Wanna know what I think is funny? Even though he's read everyone else's reviews HE NOW WANTS TO REPLACE THE MISSING SMOKE DETECTORS WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE SMOKE DETECTORS AS OPPOSED TO REPLACING ALL OF THEM WITH SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone, please, shoot me now.

1 out of 5 stars Found a fix for chirping problems   September 6, 2008

Most reviewers report random chirping. In my case, I replaced the battery and couldn't get it to stop chirping every minute, until I found this advice elsewhere on the web:

1. Unplug detector from power (or flip circuit breaker)
2. Remove battery
3. Hold down Test button for 20 seconds
4. Replace battery
5. Turn power/breaker back on

This stopped mine from chirping every minute. Give it a try on yours.
