lawnboy lawn mower July 10, 2008 Gerald A. Nagle I needed a lawn mower that would start easily, be self propelled, and not be too heavy to manuever. I read all of the reviews and decided that I wanted the lawn boy mower. When it arrived I had oil all over the cloth bag because it had traveled on its side and the filler cap had fallen off. The small amount of oil left in the mower at the factory made quite a mess inside the carton. The next problem was that the plastic part that connects the self propelled cable to the wheels was broken (this happened to others in the review section) I tried to buy this part (it was only $2.00) but three dealers did not carry this part. I would have to order it. Lawn boy does not sell parts, they must be bought from a dealer. I finally ordered this part from a Toro parts supplier.(Toro makes lawnboy and used the same parts number). I have to add that I live in the sticks. It is 12 miles to my mail box and 50 miles to the closest dealer. It finally arrived and I installed it with some trouble. (no instructions)Finally I put oil in mower (comes with mower) and filled the gas tank. It started on the first pull. The mower has excellant balance. A push down on the handle raised the front wheels off of the ground with little effort. So even if it weighs 80 pounds it is distributed very well. One last comment, It is very important that the self propelled cable be adjusted by the owner. It must be right or it will not be easy to pull it backwards And if too loose it will go forward too slowly These problems sound like a lot but the directions tell how to adjust the cable and trial and error will soon have it working right. My call to the factory to get my broken part had a surprise answer, they wanted me too repack the mower and ship it back free and they would send me a new mower. I thought that this was a dumb answer for a $2.00 part and the work to repack the mower. I enjoy mowing with this mower and I give it 4 stars
Lawn Boy Insight July 10, 2008 Ann-Marie Johnson (Florida) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The mower is a great mower over all. We love Lawn Boy. It actually is our 3rd mower. However when this mower arrived there were several broken pieces on the handle. I had to order 4 parts from Lawn Boy, before I was actually able to use the mower. Was this item really inspetced before shipping?
Lawn-Boy Lawn Mower July 6, 2008 Joseph F. Dymon (Live Oak, TX USA) This is a great mower once you get it started. I bought this mower for my daughter. We followed all the directions to get it ready to run but couldn't get it started. The blade wouldn't turn more than about 180 degrees. After about 45 minutes of fiddling with the mower, it finally started working. Once it did start to work it was great. My daughter loves it.
Love my new Lawn-boy! July 4, 2008 Phil Panhorst I was interested in the Lawn-Boy because of some unique features it had, but it was not available locally. I tried out a Craftsman with a new bagging system, but the bag was too amall, it was awkward to empty, and it did not have a good seal against the mower. So I returned it and tried out a Honda with a new bagging system. Unfortunately, it had the same problems as the Craftsman, but more grass dust because it cuts the grass up so small. (It would probably be a great choice if you mulch.) So I reluctantly ordered the Lawn-Boy over the Internet. Boy, am I glad I did! It was delivered completely assembled in 4 days, and I put the oil and gas in and it cranked on the second pull. The bagging system is the best I have ever had on any mower. It is easy to remove and replace with one hand (without having to switch hands to get it out from under the handle), it is easy to empty, and it has a large capacity and a good seal to the mower, so you don't get a lot of grass dust blown up in your face. The self-propel control is easy to get used to. The mower was too slow for me, but I actually read the manual and found out how to adjust the speed. And the feature to stow the handle is something every mower should have - one click with your foot to stow the handle straight up, and a second click with your foot to fold it all the way over. I know Consumer Reports criticised the reliability of Lawn-Boys, but I haven't had any problems yet. I know you can get a good or bad sample in any product you buy, so I am hoping for the best. This is the best mower for bagging grass that I have ever had!
Minor initial issues, but looks like a winner July 3, 2008 Brian B. James (Atlanta, Ga) Arrived with part of the Sens-a-Speed mechanism (widget on the handle) in pieces, I called Lawn-boy customer service who directed me to a web page that contained enough information to reassemble the mechanism. After I explained the problem to the customer service rep she asked if I bought the mower from Amazon and commented that it would be a good idea if instructions were included. In retrospect I should have asked if this is a common problem. Priming. It took a lot more than the recommended 3 pushes of primer to start the engine for the first time. Subsequent starts were easy. Light (compared to my old Toro), easy to maneuver, looks like a winner.
