1 out of 5 stars Disappointing   May 15, 2008
Lin Hart (California)
I've had the gas cultivator for 4 years. The first year it worked great. The second year I had to take it into the repair shop. It worked for a few days then stopped. After that, each year I have had to have it cleaned/repaired. If you are skilled in small engine upkeep you might be able to keep it going. I loved it when it was new. I am now purchasing the electric version. Hopefully it will start and run on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars It's a great machine   May 15, 2008

I should have bought this little tiller thirty years ago!

Delivery was pretty fast. Assembly took less than 20 minutes. Do not tear off the cardboard "box" that the motor assembly sits in. You need this box to stabilize the unit while you are bolting on the handles. (Ask me how I know!)

The kick stand is nice, but if you leave the unit running and resting on the kick stand, it wants to vibrate the kick stand into the folded up position. I just turned the unit off when I used the kick stand.

I am a medium size woman and am thrilled that this unit is so easy to get running. I thought it would be strenuous to start because of the pull cord, but it isn't at all. The little button that you must depress to engage the tines is tricky to use because you must keep the button depressed as long as you engage the tines. It is very easy to let go of the button, thus disengaging the tines. I will either tape it down or try to get used to it.

My beds are raised, 5 X 12 foot, edged with white cedar. I was afraid the tiller would be hard to manage and I would risk hitting white cedar with the tines. But the tiller is very easy to handle, I did not hit the cedar once.

I put the tines on for tilling the minimum depth. It tilled my beds beautifully, and didn't try to get away from me and till way down to 8-10 inches. I only wanted to till the top four inches, which it did easily. My beds had clods of mixed loam and clay with a thick winter rye grass (8"tall) in the clods. The Mantis tore through them with very little effort. It wanted to bounce on the bigger clods (two gallon bucket size clods), but it did break them up into pea sizes. I tilled four beds in less than 30 minutes, taking time out to rest in between beds.

The throttle works really nicely, I could run it at slow speeds easily.

If you plan on using the edger blade that is included, I recommend purchasing the wheel that goes on the other side of the tiller assembly to help stabilize the tiller. We have an edger already (another brand) and it is impossible to use without the guide wheel.

The literature says that two stroke oil is included in the box, but it wasn't. We had our own stock of it, so it wasn't a problem that it was missing.

My only "gripe" is that the weed reducers cost an extra $10. I feel they should be included in the cost of the unit... they are only small wheels of plastic (which cannot cost more than 50 cents) and are so functional they should be included with each tiller.

This tiller I should of bought years ago. I have a raised bed garden and couldn't use my big tiller any more for the last 8 years I have been digging it by hand. The Mantis brought my raised beds back to life. Would recomend it to everyone.

1 out of 5 stars No Mantis in my butterfly garden, I guess.   April 27, 2008
Elihu (Illinois)
I bought a new Mantis from our local hardware store today. I was so excited, as I am doing quite a bit of work in the yard this year and was ready to prep a butterfly garden. Here's how it went:

The Good =
1. It was light, as promised.
2. No problem starting up.

The Bad =
1. No-go on the tines at ALL. We read the troubleshooting section of the owner's manual, followed the directions under "tines won't engage," with no results. That puppy was NOT going to go.

The Ugly =
1. We were in the parking lot of the hardware store to make an exchange or return (depending on if they had another one available) when the man who runs the power equipment rental aspect of the store called across to us, "Trouble with that one?" My husband and I walked it over to where he was and explained the fact that the tines would simply not engage. The man told us this: "Those things are infamous for giving people problems where the drive shafts are concerned. We used to rent them out here. Had five of 'em. But you go look on our shelves now and you won't see a single one. I just said I wouldn't rent them no more. The drive shafts kept going out on 'em. The folks at the register won't like me for telling you this, but I wouldn't recommend that to anybody. We've sold brand new ones and the drive shafts just go completely out in no time. You just give that to me, and we'll go in and get your money back." And that's what we did. He's dealt with a substantial number of these machines and apparently had more trouble with them than not, so I'll be looking for something else.
