1 out of 5 stars Earthwise a decided disappointment!   July 17, 2008
David R. O'donnell (Tiffin OH)
Was very disappointed in this mower. I've used a corded electric mower for years and looked forward to a cordless version when my corded B&D finally died. Much to my surprise after 3 stripes in my lawn it rolled over and died as well!!!
The one high spot of this whole sorry experience was the ease with which Amazon accepted and arranged for the return and refund.

I still use the B&D 875 corded mower and love it for its easy push and quietness for my straight lined backyard. I got tired of the cords for my multiple treed, sloped and weird angled larger front yard. I bought this model (since it was 103 cheaper than the B&D cordless) and had a metal base vs. plastic at Do It Best hardware w/ fs to my local store. Please note Ace Hardware (299.99 w/ fs to store) and HD (317.99) are both out of stock and it doesn't look like either will be in stock anytime soon. It does weigh barely under a 100# and on the upward slopes it does give a little work out. Like numerous others, I'm trying to go as green as possible and I think this really fits the bill. Also in regards to battery replacement, 2 other kind reviewers have suggested different battery brands (BP17-12 or 12v SLA) taping 2 of the 12 volt batteries together w/ the caution of making sure they are correctly wired together to obtain the 24v charge/discharge. It seems like a feasible option vs. trashing the entire mower in a landfill-just remember to properly dispose of the old batteries. I've heard either an auto parts store or in some cities a specific drop off will gladly take the used batteries.

4 out of 5 stars Great mower! Needs better bagging system.   July 12, 2008

Mostly, I'm very satisfied with the mower. It started right up out of the box, and it cuts very efficiently, even the weeds at the back of my veg garden. Convenient height adjustment. Really like the metal construction--it has a very solid feel.

But two things bother me. 1. the bottom of the bagger tends to pop up, preventing the grass from entering the bag. I end up with no compostable grass. Very annoying, and I can't find a way to get the thing to stay down consistently and accept the grass.

And 2., it's noisier than I expected, almost as loud as a gasoline mower. But I wear my earplugs and deal with it.

It's not perfect, but I feel much better using it than I did the gas mower.

4 out of 5 stars This mower works well   July 4, 2008

I looked a whole range of mowers, and decided on this one because of the range of reviews on Amazon.
It has worked quite well on our uneven and sometimes thick lawn. It's a little heavier than our regular gas mower, but I don't mind the workout, and a little noisier than I expected from a electric mower.
I haven't used any of the attachments yet (just because), but it's good to know I'm not polluting while I mow.
It's sturdy construction and everything I needed was in the box it came in.

4 out of 5 stars Eco-friendly mower   July 3, 2008

I decided to purchase this mower after my gas mower of seventeen years required more maintenance (and cost)than I wanted to put into it. That plus the fact that fuel prices were (and are still)rising. I wanted this mower for a couple small lawns that have to be done by hand because a riding mower didn't have access. This mower fits the bill quite nicely and it doesn't require fuel so I hope I'm contributing my part to the environment.
I received the mower in its shipping box and it was extremely simple to assemble, mostly the time it took to adjust the handles. The start up mechanism is cleverly designed so that it's almost child-proof, yet easy for an adult. Right out of the box it started, but I followed the directions to charge it up first before attempting to mow. Charging time is lengthy but provided me with sufficient run time for both my yards. The charge lasted close to an hour for the mowing of both yards. The machine is definitely less noisy than my 5 horse gas mower and with the mulching accessory it left little trace of the clippings. Unless you want to use the included bagger (which I used but requires multiple emptying)I was very pleased with its performance. The adjustable height settings are very easy to change, and the cutting width of 20 inches was comparable to my former 21" gas mower.
There are two things that I have to say are cons about this mower, one of which I had read in a prior review before purchasing. When mowing and pulling the machine backward, the plastic guard that lies below the rear discharge area folds back under the mower and can (in my case)be cut by the blades. It was disappointing to see this after my first use of the machine. While it didn't destroy the guard or hopefully its functionality, it is a problem. The second (and far less negative comment) is the placement of the battery charge indicator. It's very hard to see while mowing (especially in bright sunlight) and so it's hard to know when it's time to quit. I discovered the engine simply begins to slow down and its performance suffers. It would be nice to locate it in a more viewable setting, but it's not enough of an issue (in my opinion) to keep from purchasing the machine.
Overall I am impressed with this mower and would definitely recommend it to anyone who has light mowing needs (1/4 acre or less). Reducing my use and dependence on gasoline is a direction I hope to continue, and this mower certainly helps.
