great tool but... June 12, 2008 mittcraft (outside Boston) I have had this drill about a year and use it almost everyday. I got it to replace an old milwaulkee pistol grip 18v hammer drill and it is such a pleasure to use in comparison to that awkward old beast. The tool is very light for a powerfull 18 volt drill and the grip fits very nicely in my hand. The batteries are amazing! I drilled about 300 3/16" holes in 1/8" aluminum on one battery. Although I don't often need a hammer drill it is nice to have it when needed and it worked good enough the one time that I really needed it. Now the negative, After having the tool for less than 2 months the chuck locked up and would not open up and I had to send it out for repair, then after about 10 months I used the drill to drill about 100 1/2" holes in 1/4" aluminum and I guess this was a little much for it because it killed the gear assembly and I had to send it out again. Although it was an inconvenience for my drill to break on me, Makita was great about fixing it quickly and getting it back to me in about 3 business days and it was all at no cost to me since it was still under warranty. If I had to choose again I would maybe consider the panasonic 15.6 nimh drill but I think I would end up sticking with my decision on the makita because it has the hammer drill feature and the little light comes in handy when your finishing something up outside at night.
Factory reconditioned? May 25, 2008 Antonia Verde THe drill is okay, but the condition after 'reconditioning' was scruffy. I expected better as it looked as though it had had at least a month's site use before being sent back as a warranty failure. It may well have a new motor, or something in it, but the case was not good. If I'd had more time I would have sent it back.
