Check Yes, And Buy It September 13, 2008 Flap Jackson (State Road, NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As much as it may seem like pop/rock is forever relegated to the halls of highschools all across America, with critics forever hating on the genre as unoriginal, shallow and narrowly-focused, the genre does have its breakout hit every year or so. Yellowcard's classic "Ocean Avenue," comes to mind. In 2008, "Check Yes Juliet" is making waves because it the formula right, with nothing forced, just fun and girls. There's clearly a reason why these songs always get their due in the summer. And as much as some would love to stamp the song out as the same old fare, it does make several attempts to throw you off track. Take for example "Rain is falling down on the sidewalk." Now, it may just be me, but I expected him to say 'ceiling' instead of 'sidewalk.' It may not be much, but it's a start. It also gets the pop/rock formula dead-on, with catchy verses, the lyrical subject, the rockin' music, and a beat-all chorus. If you're a fan of the genre, what's not to like? "Check Yes Juliet" by We the Kings and "Thunder" by Boys Like Girls are certainly the soundtrack of summer 2008, and certainly the best the genre has produced in a while. While the haters won't be swayed, the kids will certainly put a check next to this song, and deservedly so.
