5 out of 5 stars Consciousness Raising - Inspiring   August 27, 2008
Enrique Haro Martinez (Mexico City)
More than being an excellent piece for the closing credits section of a movie, and also an excellent song in terms of musical qualities, I was impressed by the content and the conscious raising about the fact that we are "messing up our homeland" as Peter Gabriel says.

I recently watched " The 11th Hour", and I am more convinced that we are bound to extinction unless we do something radical to achieve a healthy balance that allow the humankind to stay around in harmony with the rest of the environment (note that I imply that WE are part of the environment) not for 50 or 100 years, but in the long run.

In the recent years we have had a big debate on the global warming of the earth. I as engineer can't believe all the misleading statements made by Al Gore in his book/movie, and even though I recognize that we are messing up out planet big time, there are other more pressing matters in terms of humankind survival than fighting climate change (BTW, the climate has been changing for hundreds of million years and is mostly related to the sun activity and its effect on earth. These other matters are better addressed in "The 11th Hour" and document the state of affairs in our homeland

Going Back to Wall-E. The movie (that is a mix of Blade Runner. Brave New World, 2001 a Space Odyssey and Toy Story) is a good story of what might happen when we finally almost destroy life on earth (a cockroach as a pet is a good symbolic element). Unfortunately, I think that we won't be able to "Set Sail for the Sky" any time soon.

Down to Earth really captures the spirit of this conscious raising movement so we do something to tackle the most formidable challenge that the humankind (and a good part of the rest of life on earth) face.

Enjoy.... enrique

4 out of 5 stars What you'd expect from PG   July 5, 2008

Having not had the benefit of seeing the movie I listened to this single based on the ratings here on Amazon. Let me just say that context is everything and maybe the movie helps. While this is a good B+ effort from PG. Personally I wouldn't include it in one of his top 10. Compare this to Eddie Vedder's Hard Sun from the Music for the Motion Picture Into the Wild. Regardless of seeing Into the Wild, the EV song has an impact.

Bottomline. If you're a PG fan, download the single. It's worth .89, but I wouldn't buy the entire OST.

A wonderful song which elevates and honors the concept of closing credits. The visuals provide a beautiful narrative as well. Stay in your seat until the film is complete.

After watching the movie, as I normally do, I stayed for the closing titles and was gladly surprised that Peter Gabriel was the artist behind the song. A movie so powerful and touching at the same time was perfectly suited for such a powerful and touching song.

After hearing this song by Peter Gabriel called "Down to Earth" from the Wall-E soundtrack I just had to write in that it is, in two words:

Simply.

Beautiful.
