Exactly what Kanye West wanted... December 4, 2008 showstopperno4 (California, USA) When I first listened to the album, I didn't really like it, but then I listened to it again and again and listened to the words. People have to remember, this is a whole different kanye west. "The college" series is over and I think that a lot of people were expecting typical kanye with big bass beats but those albums was aimed toward his emotions at the time. After kanye's moms tradegy happened, he poured out a different set of emotions in this album. After you listen to the lyrics and understand it, then you can truly appreciate his music.
Disappointed December 4, 2008 baduizm (Columbia, SC) I am a HUGE Kanye West Fan...I have every album he has ever written. This album is TERRIBLE. I appreciate him doing something different. That would be great, if the different was also GOOD. Slate said it best "On past songs such as "Drive Slow," "Gone," and "Roses," West proved he was capable of wringing emotional truths from concise vignettes, telling details, and knotty wordplay. Here, as a narrator of pain and spite, he's frequently imprecise, banal, and unevocative: "Life's just not fair"; "I don't love you no more"; "Will I ever love again?" The lyrics can suggest an emo kid scribbling grievances in third-period English class." Don't buy it. It was interesting to me that as I read down the other reviews the people who liked it were people who said they were NOT a Kanye fan. The people who don't like it ARE Kanye fans. Come on Kanye, wake up! You cannot sing, you CAN rap. Please do what you do best.
Kanye Off To Explore New Elements December 4, 2008 Corey Turner (NH) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just wanted to do a quick recap of this album. Kanye West many find to be a poor choice for the media to soak up. Some find him to be the next big thing. Whatever you interpret him as, one can't deny "808s & Heartbreak" is deep. Simply put, it's not a mind blowing album. It's a mid paced smooth electronically infused album. Many have cited the auto-tune vocals to be the downfall of the album, or voyaging into new territory. He enables this tuning mechanism for the entire album, and sings in its entirety. Great way to bind the album. About three people are featured on the album (one being Lil Wayne). The album rings pretentious or over dramatized at times, so it may seem to be a bit of a downer. In all honesty this feels to be more a pop orientated album then anything. Never a bad thing if you're willing to expand. Favorite tracks after three listens, "Robocop" and "Say You Will". Robocop , call me crazy, features background music I could almost imagine from Coldplay. "Say You Will" has some soul elemental background music added to the interface, makes the song sound deeper then it probably should. It's a minimalistic album, but remains smooth. Some will argue the first three tracks are the best, and it's understandable. With one listen not too many songs will jump out, give it a few tries (never know?). Overall Kanye has made a strong effort. Whether people agree or disagree on all this little issues, he did put emotive in to it and tried new things. So is this album right for you? It's not the same Kanye West, and it may not be great for people deeply seeded into one genre.
sound pleasing awesome! December 4, 2008 m. shoe 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Kanye West's latest 808's and Heartbreak is amazing. True, it is completely different from his other efforts (all singing, barely if any rapping). True, I was extremely hesitant to even give it a try and did not like it in the beginning. But, Kanye has proved himself once again as an extremely creative, talented artist who shines above the rest. Each track, although somewhat similar sounding at first, have unique beats and catchy tunes enough to help them stand out individually. The guest appearances are spread out throughout the album, adding additional variation. I also really enjoyed how the album flowed together smoothly, such as the end of "Amazing" to the beginning of "Love Lockdown" with the same beats. "Welcome To Heartbreak" has such an intense, suspenseful mixture of beats sounding like the start of an epic journey. Lil Wayne's whiny, creepy voice matches Kanye's electronic vocals well on "See You In My Nightmares," while "Coldest Winter" includes one of the bombest drum solos at the end. The only gripe I have about this album is the final song, "Pinocchio Story", a live recording, which sounds weak and less substantial than the other songs. (the random girls' screaming in the background also deters) Key Tracks: "Welcome To Heartbreak" "Heartless" "Robocop" "See You In My Nightmares"

I own and love every Kanye album. I listened to 808s & Heartbreak once through and had to throw it away. Literally.
