4 out of 5 stars king of 'understated'   August 1, 2006

If I were to describe this watch in one word it would be 'understated'. If this watch was anymore understated it would be a Timex. If you're looking for a watch that is the polar opposite of the hip-hop, platinum and bling, oversized, over-complicated, over-expensive trophy watch, look no further. In fact, I've never seen a watch more deserving of the title so I crown the Traser H3 P5900 the king of 'understated'.

I love military style watches for these said same understated looks. When I'm talking about military watches I'm not talking about those multi-dial chronographs wannabe jet-jocks seem to prefer, but the tough, no-nonsense time piece a grunt would wear. The P5900 is small (only 38mm), light (with a fiberglass reinforced polyamide [read 'fancy plastic'] case), black and very tough. This is not a watch to impress those not 'in the know' and even your watch-geek buddies may overlook the P5900 as a drugstore black-plastic beater if they're not paying attention.

38mm is small by today's standards were some he-men won't consider anything under 40mm but the P5900 doesn't look tiny on your wrist. Admittedly, I'm stick thin and so I am always glad to find a watch that doesn't draw attention to my skinny arms. A little counterintuitively, the strap is not designed built for diminutive wrists and I had to make an extra whole for 7.25". The strap is the weakest part of the package in my opinion. I like the "traser" signed buckle but the combination leather / nylon strap is a little fussy for such a plain watch. I think the watch may look better on a standard webbing strap - something in cammo green would enhance the whole foot-soldier aesthetic.

By comparison, I love the P5900 watch head. The matt-black case is nicely executed with nicely proportioned shoulders to protect the non-screw down crown. A nice fingernail recess allows for easy access to that crown when you need to adjust the time or date. The front of the case is decorated by an elegant stainless steal bezel around the face and the back sports a laser-etched cover held in place by 4 screws - both add to the no-nonsense, solid effect.

But this watch does have one trick up its sleeve that we see when we turn out attention to the face; tritium vials that illuminate the hands and hour markers. This is the brightest watch I've owned apart aside from active, backlit solutions. The Gaseous Tritium Light Source is supposed to last a couple of decades and the glow it produces is not reliant on the battery or fast decaying luminous paint. In the movie-theatre test, the time is a breeze to read without fiddling with any buttons and even two and a half hours into the movie. A nice touch is that the 12 o'clock marker glows amber not green.

In part due to the construction to incorporate the GTLS vials the face is very 3 dimensional and chunky. The chapter ring has saw holes at the hour markers to expose the vials. The hands are beautifully simple and the vials add a little texture to that simplicity. The face sports a date field at the 3 o'clock position. The dial wears "H3" and the radiation symbol labels but no brand (I really like unbranded watches) for that authentic military feel. This aesthetic is further reinforced by the plain white numerals with smaller, military time numerals on the inside of the dial.

This watch takes abuse and keeps looking smart. This is not a watch that attracts a lot (if any) attention - can I get the word "understated" into this review one more time? It doesn't have the glamour of a diver's or pilot's watch. It just does one thing industrially well, it tells the time, with, or without, the lights on.
