Good printer July 17, 2008 bholt777 (Floresville, TX) I needed something for my office at work to supplement the laser printer. This works great. One thing I find disturbing is the HP Imaging software pops up on your monitor screen when you go to copy anything. Otherwise, performs as expected.
Good printer/fax/scanner, but INK WARNING July 15, 2008 Derek Wilson (Austin, Texas United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had an hp refurb for 4 years and it never let me down, so when it was time to re-up I decided to stick with the brand. Everything is great except the (black)ink. I have replaced it twice in a short period of time and now it's empty again. I would think mine is just a defective unit, but I am reading that a number of other are having the same problem. I would still be on my first cartridge with my old one. Considering the price of ink and the inconvenience of Office Depot runs, I think I'll throw this one up on craigslist and buy something that doesn't cost so much to upkeep.
Good Printer Lousy Fax April 10, 2008 James Brown The printing features are exceptional for a low end printer. The scanner has a more than adequate resolution. As a stand-alone fax it would also be good. But if you want to support faxing from your PC then I would not recomend this model. It will not allow you send a fax from your PC with a cover page. According to HP support, they had problems getting it to work correctly with Vista so they just dropped the capability completly. I don't know about you but when I am send a fax, it needs a cover sheet to make sure that it is routed correctly when it gets received on the other end. I suppose it would be ok if you call the person you are sneding the fax to and let them know that they need to stand by the fax machine and wait for your fax. Personaly I think that it sucks. Actually it depends on who you talk to at HP. Either they couldn't get get it to work or so many people complained that the default was to send a cover sheet and it was being sent when people didn't want to send it that they just dropped the capability. Either way, I bought one and after spending 15 hours with their support, they came back and said that it works the way they want it to and there was nothing to fix and I should go pound sand. I'll never buy another HP product again. Apparently they have adopted Compaqs support style.
HP vs; Vista Software problems April 5, 2008 Vernon H. Fix (Virginia Beach) HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q8232A#ABA) I bought this to get the benefits of the All-in-One and it was one of the few advertised as being Vista ready. When I installed it about a month ago I could not get the HP software to work. HP solution Center gave me an error that it did not find any HP products and shut down. After many emails to HP Tech upport and one phone consult of 2.5 hours I was giving up. Now let me say that with an older WinXP computer it all worked fine. But to use it on my new HP computer I needed all the software to work. Two days ago I managed to wipe my 500 Gig hard drive slick. After re-installing the system, Vista, I installed the HP printer software and Wow, it worked. Solution to the problem is that in all of my many un-installs and re-installs I never could completely get rid of all the residual pieces of software. I consider the install and the uninstall HP software to be defective in that they did not adequately do thier jobs. If the uninstall would have really cleaned it out then the next install would have worked as it did after a total disk wipe. If the install software had been smart enought to fix or replace any defective software maybe it would have worked. My advice---be careful. The printer works great now, a little slower than I expected but it works great. The Amazon support was great. Thank you so much.
Hardware works nice, software - not so nice. March 16, 2008 Uri Raz (Israel) I've attached the printer to a computer running WinXP SP2, and a USB 2 adapter I've inserted into a PCI slot. Though every other device I connected to the USB 2 ports worked just fine, the printer would not, regardless of the many solutions offered by HP support. Eventually I had to reinstall XP from scratch in order to solve the problem. Possibly the drivers installation from the CD accompanying the adapter is somehow different (and broken) from the drivers installation from the XP SP2 CD installation. I use an English user interface for XP, with non-UTF applications set to Hebrew. The printer auto-detects this setup, and chooses a Hebrew interface for both the software and cartridge alignment dialogs - which comes out garbled and completely useless. To top that, the black ink level is displayed, but the color ink level is not. The local support opened a call to HP abroad, and never returned to me. That means I can't & don't use the software at all, and have to guess what those dialogs instruct me to do when I change ink cartridges. I'm using the printer mostly for black & white prints, a little color scanning & printing, and sending faxes. The printer performs those tasks well, with the fax being quicker than others I've worked with. To summarize, I would be happy if the printer would allow me to manually select the user interface language, and fall back to English. As it doesn't, I might very well buy a different brand next time I shop for a printer. __________ Additional comments after further use _________ The XL ink cartridges are sufficient for a large number of pages (at least several hundrends of pages), and do not dry when out of use. Another minor problem is with CPU percent used during printing - on a 2.4GHz CPU & 512MB of RAM, the printer spool process would use as much as 100% of the CPU, even when printing several copies of a single page document.
