3 out of 5 stars Try It First   May 2, 2008
Brian Seiler (Tomball, TX USA)

Personal admission - I at least aspire to be some form of video game reviewer, and the Wii was the last console this generation that I've purchased by a long margin, largely because I suspected from the beginning that I would hate it forever. Turns out I was right. Most of my commentary following will at least aspire to neutrality, but just so the dedicated Nintendo fans can dismiss me now, I'm not among those who welcome any stupid idea from the company with open arms.

I hate this thing. I hate it with every fiber of my being. When the next console comes out I will take this thing out to a big field and smash it to pieces with a whiffle ball bat. I hate it for being the only repository for modern Nintendo console games and I hate that so many other people like it and I just don't understand what they're seeing.

But what, you might ask yourself, is my deal? Well, for one thing, I don't like the controls. At all. When I play a video game, I like being able to immerse myself in the game and not think about what I'm doing with my hands and body. The Wii takes that away from me and puts me back in the same position I was when I was eight years old and trying to figure out what the different between A and B were on my NES. This is an individual response, but as far as I'm concerned, waving my arms around like I'm hitting a baseball doesn't make me feel like I'm playing baseball - it makes it very obvious to me that I'm not interacting with my on-screen avatar in an easy or efficient way.

The upside of this is that if you're a casual gamer or a newcomer to the field of computer games, you'll probably have an easier time warming up to the controls that I did. The irony is delicious, really. I certainly get what the charm would be for a person who doesn't play many games, but truly "hardcore" players who have spent years upon years learning how to work a DualShock might want to try the system out extensively before purchase.

The second reason I hate the system has to do with the fact that it doesn't support HD, and this is something that everybody needs to think about. The Wii can output a 480p widescreen signal, which is fine for a regular SD televisions, but you definitely need to check the performance for standard definition on an HD set before you invest. Most low-end high definition sets don't come with Feroudja upscalers, and that can lead to some really, really awful looking SD, including whatever comes out of your Wii. It's definitely a good idea to track down the proper settings for your particular set if this sort of thing is important to you.

I am, of course, being quite harsh. My mileage with the system has been and will continue to be terrible because of my reaction to the controls, but anybody not subject to my own strange prejudices will probably have a reasonable time. While there's a shortage of monumentally great games (at least, as a percentage of total game output), there are plenty of wonderful titles that you can find for the system, and it's likely that your children will have a fun time with it. The best thing you can do in this case is to do some research on your own television's performance and play with the thing in a store before you buy, just to be sure that you'll like it once you get it home. For my part, I know that I'm not enjoying my purchase at all, but it's entirely likely that you might.

5 out of 5 stars Wii Will Rock You   May 1, 2008
Theodore Sung (Needham, MA USA)
Here's my personal opinion on the Nintendo Wii. First, let me just say that I had to wait 8 months before I could get my Wii last year but it was well worth the wait. It's the best system out there, much better than the 360 or the PS3.

If your a graphics-freak, then go help yourself to any of the systems. True, Wii can't match the PS3 in graphics but the gameplay of the Wii is simply SO much better than Sony and Microsoft. And occasionaly, the graphics of the Wii will stun you by the breath-taking detail of some games. The controls for the Wii are beautiful and so much more fun and interactive with than the normal controllers. But if you want to play with the GameCube then you can go ahead and plug your memory card and controller right in.

For games, Nintendo has really been rocking with its newest additions such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl (an instant classic), Super Paper Mario, Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, and one of the best RPGs out there, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (I'd only recommend this is your into RPG stuff). All of these games will keep you up for at least 2 weeks each.

The Wii's also great because it's very interactive with its revolutionary controls and is great with 4 players. Its a great system for the whole family because anyone and everyone can have fun with it. All I can say is that Nintendo really hit one outta the park here.

Unfortunatly, some games for the Wii are very disappointing and boring. I personally didn't like Twilight Princess. Other examples are the Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam and Mario Party 8. MP8 wasn't a bad game, it was just disappointing because of its lack of ussage of the Wiimote and how awful some minigames were. There were some that were really fun and some cool new characters but the game just wasn't any different for Mario Part 6 or 7.

Anyway, if you have any doubts about the price or if it will entertain you I just wanna say that you will be pleasantly surprised. The sound system is pretty good and the gameplay is excellent and very original. Overall, I'd rate it a:

9.5/10
because of its amazingness but allowing the creation of some games so bad you just wanna puke on yourself for buying the game. It is definitly a MUST BUY system and is probably the best system to be out there for at least another 10 years.

5 out of 5 stars Wii Rocks!!!   April 30, 2008
Senthil A. Rajendran (Woodbridge, NJ USA)
Along with 1000 positive reviews already posted, I want to add mine as well. I am not gamer and hate all the gaming console that makes anyone a couch potato. All these got changed when I first had my try at my friends place. WOW!!! this is very nice where you can actually play with your whole body in motion like in actual game(well, for some games, you can also make it easy by just turning your wrists) This is good. Correction. This is REALLY good. I also pre-ordered the wii-fit at AMAZON (an amazing site that I admire along with GOOGLE) and waiting for it to arrive.

5 out of 5 stars Nintendo Wii Console w/ 5 Sports Games   April 28, 2008
Marilyn Schrum (Pittsburgh, PA)
An amazing Family game that brings everyone together for a great time with the Wii console. The 5 games that come with the console are enough that their is no need to buy any more, but things do not last forever. However the online purchasing of classic games is great as well. 5 Stars From The Home of the Penguins!
