If you are a Lostie, definitely give it a go. November 8, 2008 S. Taylor (Georgia) Title says it all. It is absolutely worth playing for 4 hours of your life for a little bit extra knowledge in the Lost Universe. Story wise, it's excellent. Especially the ending. The best damn 30 seconds ever. Gameplay wise, its mediocre. Nothing special there. Sound: Excellent use of the real musical score from the show, but the voice acting is average at best. Very short game, but will net you a very easy 1000 Achievement points and will leave you saying WTF?!?!?!
Not Worth It ... October 10, 2008 Ron Sullivan (Philadelphia, PA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Being a modest fan of the show, I was looking forward to checking 'Lost' out at some point. Recently my local library actually started to lend out a small selection of 360 games; so when I saw that 'Via Domus' was among the games I grabbed it for myself. Now that I've finished it, I can say that although the game isn't offensively bad, I'm really glad this isn't one that I paid for. As for the good, the rendering of the island itself is really quite good and the jungle certainly has the right, lush, tropical, look and feel to it. It still travels sort of linear though. If you travel too far off track, you'll just be bounced back on the correct path. I think it would have been more fun if it was a little more open so you could just carve your own paths with a machete and map out the island on your own. The music for the game uses the score to the TV show, so the sound to the game is completely authentic and terrific. The voice acting, on the other hand, is god-awful. Virtually nobody from the A-list cast showed up and nobody sounds like themselves. John Locke's voice in particular, I didn't think was even close. It's strange too, because I remember several interviews with Matthew Fox doing press for the game. I just assumed his voice was included, but it isn't. The game includes a bartering system to gain objects; you'll trade papayas and coconuts for a torch or a lantern, for example. Unfortunately, outside of a couple of torches and one gun (which, I kid you not, you shoot no more then three times ... only one of which is a person) you don't really need anything. The whole trading system turns out to be kind of a farce. The story is OK and mildly interesting, even if the ending had me scratching my head, but it is REALLY short. I finished the game 100% in what couldn't have been more then 5 hours of play. I was hoping that, to some extent, 'Lost' would use games like 'Drakes: Uncharted' or 'Tomb Raider' as a template for it's game play but instead the game play itself FEELS like an episode of the TV show and its not very interactive. This has the game commit the mortal sin of just being dull. Simply put, there's just no meat here to sink your teeth into and with very little else going in the right direction, there's not much at all working for the game to justify a purchase. If you were a die-hard fan of the show and, somehow, fall into a copy of 'Lost' I can honestly say it's worth, at least, checking out. That said; however, if you have to plunk down so much as a nickel to play this, skip it. It's just not worth it. I'd have been really disgusted with myself if I paid anything to play this.
Barely a rental... August 29, 2008 Benjamin A. Cohen (Omaha, NE) I bought this game when Amazon had a special price of $18 for this game. I am a big Lost fan and kinda enjoyed the 6 hour experience that was "Via Domus". I was given advice to NOT buy this game, but lucked out on the price, and decided to go ahead and buy it. When I traded it in, I got the value I paid for it... so I am not too disappointed with the price. If you are not a Lost person, this is not worthy of your time.
it didn't COMPLETELY suck... August 13, 2008 Kendall Perry This game does the show no justice at all. Sure, its just as insanely confusing as the show, and the graphics were great (characters looked good, voices matched up well, smoke monster was freaky) but when you weren't solving a "fuse" puzzle or running from the smoke monster, the game was pretty much beat for you- all you had to do was run around and the answers fell into your lap. Oh, and there is NO satisfaction of "Hey I beat a game!" when you win because it ends..well... I guess exactly as I should think it would...CONFUSING. Don't let me stop you from playing this game, because it was pretty cool for hardcore LOST fans, but...well... Don't buy it full price! I bought it used for $9.99 and you don't know how happy I am for that!
I feel ripped off lol! August 6, 2008 K. Cody I have loved the show Lost since it first aired and was eagerly awaiting playing this game. If youre not a fan of the show, don't bother playing this because you'll just be lost (excuse the pun) as to the storyline. However unlike some other reviewers I found it an enjoyable game to play with the exception of the silly fuse puzzles. Also the "other" off in the distance taking shots at you as you walked through the jungle seemed rather out of the normal storyline. I know gunfire is fairly common in the show but getting fired upon walking to and from the hatch was kind of ridiculous, good thing the guy is a lousy shot. The mindless collecting of water bottles, coconuts, cans of beer and various other tradable items is mostly a waste of time as you'll only need to trade a few times throughout the game, usually for torches or lanterns so you can see to explore the various dark caves and passageways. Even later in the game after you trade for a gun there are a number of ammo clips you can pick up but you only fire three shots in the entire game. You'll feel pretty foolish picking up all that junk when you finish the game and realize you didn't need most of it. The graphics are top notch, you'll recognize all your favorite cast member right off and to disagree with previous reviewers I thought the voice impersonations were pretty darn close. The ending was a total surprise, and worth playing just to see that. It's a true to form "Lost" season ending! That being said as mentioned by other reviewers I feel a little ripped off at paying about 30 bucks for a game that can be finished in 8 or 10 hours, and once finished you'll likely have no desire or motivation to ever play again. If youre looking to add an easy 1000 points to your gamer score this game will do that for you, most all the achievements are fairly simple to get even the hidden ones, however there is one that takes a bit of clever thinking to achieve and another one takes pure blind luck to find. Overall I recommend renting this one for the weekend, once you've played it you'll thank me for that tip.
