Huge Environments, Bigger Gameplay
For those who loved Gears of War, Gears of War 2 builds upon it in every way, but with several major enhancements. There are more weapons, bigger vehicles, and more action. The enemies are more dangerous, and the total experiences is more immersive than ever. And with a revolutionary tactical combat system, the game will require not just fast reaction times and shooting skill, it will also challenge you to devise a strategy that will work against the enemies who exhibit smart AI.

Jaw-Dropping, Realistic Graphics
Just as Gears of War did the first time around, Gears of War 2 ups the ante for graphical prowess. Combined with the sweeping vistas and evocative locales of Sera, where the story takes place, Gears of War 2 offers jaw-dropping graphics that are made possible through advances in Unreal Engine 3. New visual effects include ambient occlusion, dynamic shadows, improved character lighting, the ability to render hundreds of on-screen characters simultaneously, improved water physics, additional blood and bullet decals, advanced destructible environments, new weather effects, and the introduction of fluid objects.

Immersive, Gripping Story
Taking place six months after the end of the first game, Gears of War 2 returns the cast of characters of the original, including Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, as well as several newcomers.

Novelist and comic book writer Joshua Ortega, who assisted with the writing, has created a story that is big on character development and personality. With a new in-game conversational camera system and multiple story arcs, the story is presented in a gripping cinematic style where characters gain an emotional depth that matches their realistic graphical representation.

More Characters, Upgraded Vehicles, Badder Weapons
Those who were impressed by the original Gears of War will be in for a real treat. New characters such as Tai Kaliso, weapons like the burst pistol, and huge vehicles like the COG Centaur tank will give players a whole new dimension and scope of gameplay in both single-player and multi-player modes.

Multiplayer Action with Xbox LIVE!
Gears of War 2 features a multiplayer mode that allows up to 10 simultaneous players for outstanding multiplayer fun. Taking full advantage of the Xbox LIVE service, which boasts 10 million gamers, Gears of War 2 features both competitive and cooperative multiplayer gameplay. Setting up games is simple with LIVE, and you have the ability to drop in and out of co-operative campaigns at any time.

Everything you loved about multiplayer in the original is back, including the classic death matches, but with this sequel there is an added emphasis on teamwork. New multiplayer game modes will require better coordination in order to win. The game also features voice support, so you can communicate with other players around the world -- whether you're on the same team or trash talking!

Gears of War 2 won several awards at E3 2008, where it was first presented, including Overall Best Shooting Game and Overall Best Graphics Technology of E3 2008 from IGN, as well as Best Action Game of E3 2008 from the Game Critics Awards.

3 out of 5 stars Not a 5 star game...Worms & Fish just bring it down!   December 3, 2008

Ya know I was hoping that this game would be pure shotem' up just like the Halo series, but no, they put in silly individual tests (much like in interchanging levels like Crash Bandicoot) that are repetitive & BORING! I mean ENOUGH ALREADY! This type of play is for children, & they make this an adult game...First you have to fight nemacysts, screaming blind deaf banshees, wretches, exploding wretches, gigantic spiders & now mortors, skitters, exploding skitters, worms, fish, & Skorcher????HELLO!!! EPIC! GET WITH THE PROGRAM WERE ALL ADULTS HERE!

Other than that, the game is good, just get rid of the childs play & you will be BETTER than the Halo series. Graphics are above par (if Halo is the bar) the blood & guts are above par, & the head shots YEAOZZZA!!!!Gotta love the Longshot head shots!

5 out of 5 stars Gears of War 2   December 3, 2008

Unbelieveably awesome visuals (read: inside the worm), a great storyline, and the same easy to use controls that made the first Gears of War so popular make this, in my opinion, one of the greatest video games ever made.

5 out of 5 stars From a Casual Player   December 2, 2008

This game is amazing in a scale from 1-10:

Graphics: 11+
Sound (voices): 11+
Fun Factor: 10 (Insane level can be very tough on you)
Length: 10 (It's OK)
Difficulty: Depends on you :)

I played GOW 1 about 4-5 times, and playing GOW 2 made this experience fulfilling, the story even though is not that robust, is very appropriate for the game. At the end when you are kicking your enemy's morale, the last thing you care is the story. But again: the story is good, and I did enjoy it.
Boss fights were present but as always requires thinking in terms of how to destroy a huge nasty monster. My recommendation: Do not look for guides, go ahead and figure it out on your own it's a lot better this way.
I have played two rounds already (going my third in co-op mode) and I have to admit, that you can enjoy this game a lot more if you play with a friend. If you do this, make sure to play in Hardcore Mode, normal won't be that challenging in co-op mode.
This game is immersive and you'll be looking for time to finish the next Act. Really: You won't regret this buy!

5 out of 5 stars Gears 2 is Great   December 2, 2008
D. Bostinelos (Sioux City, IA)
If you loved the first Gears, you will love this one as well. The multiplayer coop and Horde modes are fantastic and will keep you and your friends busy for hours. The story mode was fun as well, but the story somewhat confused me and I hope it gets wrapped up well in the 3rd game. I felt alot of the content in the story and story mode play were lifted from Halo, but not enough to get your panties in a bunch over. If you are looking for some mindless, violent fun, this is the game for you.

4 out of 5 stars A great game when it sticks to what it knows.   December 2, 2008

The light mass bomb has been delivered. The bomb was supposed to send the locust on the run. Instead it has made them more (desperate?) aggressive and they are pressing ever closer to the last remaining human stronghold, Jacinto. Enter Delta squad fresh from delivering the Light Mass bomb to the Locust base, Marcus Fenix and his friend Dom where hoping for a little R&R (in Dom's case more time to hunt for his missing wife), instead they get stuck with training Delta's newest recruit. Things quickly go from bad to worse as the training exercise turns into a trial by fire as the locust launch a surprise attack on Jacinto and have to be chased out by the COG army. This attack prompts COG command to launch a counter attack while they still have the upper hand in the aftermath of the light mass bomb. Guess which squad gets to be the tip of the spear.....
-------
I liked this game when it was being the game I wanted to play. Which was the tactical game where the player has to make good use of cover to take out the opposing locust forces. The first game did a good job of this and generally made sure that the player had to use a little bit of strategy to pick off the opposing force so that the player could move forward foot by hard earned foot until the enemy could be flanked and eliminated. This game does that too.... when its not making me want to throw the controller across the room because the developers for some reason decided that they would make just about every other act some kind of rail shooter or puzzle level. Yes I get this was done for co-op and this is probably fun if you have someone to play through the whole game with either on your couch or online. But if like me, you are unable to do this (I play late at night) for whatever reason, then you will be stuck with the semi bright AI that tends to get confused with the simple things like heal fallen comrades, stay in cover and generally be more of a help than a hindrance. Other than some design decisions that I disagree with the game does move along at a pretty good clip and made me want to keep playing. The story is standard video game but, I guess the developer is trying to get on the Halo bus by making it deeper and more complicated (emphasis on complicated). If you've read a lot of Sci-Fi then you can sort of fill in the blanks yourself. Other than that it probably is better to wait for the next game or read the GOW books that are coming out to make it make sense. Online multiplayer (what I played of it) is fun and is an improvement over the original. Besides the Co-op through the story and the standard multiplayer modes there is a new mode called horde which requires players to fend off an ever increasing wave of enemies. Last but not least in the eyes of many (myself not included) the graphics are great, the characters don't fall into the uncanny valley and stuff blows up real good. I would recommend this game to anyone who liked the first one, those that like to play through games in co-op and those that like sci-fi based action/adventure tactical shooters. M.a.c
Graphics: Great. No uncanny valley, semi destructible cover. Stuff blows up good.
Story: Its like reading book 3 in a 5 book series. You'll get why they are doing what they are doing, but your not real sure how the got there. Kinda like the first game, it just moves the game along so you can shoot more stuff.
Game Play: When the game wasn't breaking up the flow with annoying puzzle levels or rail shooters it did a good job of making me want to keep playing to the end. My only other complaint is that sometimes it is not exactly obvious where your supposed to go. If I am wandering around for five minutes a nice arrow or hey stupid over here would be nice.
Camera/Controls: Worked good for me. No cameral issues. No throw the controller across the room moments.
