Amazon.com Review Electronic Arts' Need for Speed series continues to lead the exotic car-racing pack in its latest incarnation, Need for Speed: High Stakes. Though graphically similar to the previous version (Need for Speed III), High Stakes innovates with new race tracks, visible car damage, and a career mode that should please racing fans. Diverse play modes separate Need for Speed: High Stakes from standard driving computer games. Though single races and tournaments across several tracks are readily available, players can also participate in the inventive Hot Pursuit mode, where you flee from police or try to catch speeders, as well as a career game. In the career game, drivers begin with enough cash to buy a low-end sports car. Prize money earned in races can be spent on repairs, performance upgrades, or a hotter car. High Stakes contains over twenty exotic cars, including the BMW Z3, Lamborghini Diablo SV, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Ferrari F50. Additional dream machines are available at Electronic Arts' Web site. If you don't have the patience to save up for a new car, you can choose the ultimate high stakes race: winner takes all, including the opponent's car. With cutting-edge graphics and sound, Need for Speed: High Stakes reigns as the current leader in arcade racing. Whether you're a NFS veteran or new to the series, Need for Speed: High Stakes's polished gameplay, sleek design, and plentiful play options should keep you on the open road for quite awhile. --Doug Radcliffe Pros: - Incredible graphics and lightning-fast engine provide true sense of speed
- New career mode offers role-playing-like experience
- Additional cars and tracks can be downloaded from Electronic Arts
- Damage modeling lets you bang up that beautiful Lamborghini
Cons: - Not a revolutionary upgrade to Need for Speed III

A classic game October 27, 2008 Avery I bought this to complete my collection. I expected the graphics to be a bit cheesy, due to its age, but it was fun nonetheless.
fun April 11, 2008 postman (chicago, il) i had need for speed 2, 3, and high stakes and all were fun; liked the music and gamplay in high stakes, graphics could have been better though but other wise a good game. if you are into racing classics then this is the game to get.
Amazing PC Game! January 19, 2006 Media Lover 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My friend and I played this years ago. It is the most fun I have ever had on the PC. The multiplayer rocks, and the graphics were great for back then. It's funny that I would review this now, because my computer won't even run a game this old. But, if you have an older PC, and it runs games, you need this.
Need For Speed Crazy December 8, 2005 Richard Moffitt I had the game years ago but the steering was a bit delayed. I just purchased a new system with Windows XP and a high speed graphics card and now the game works GREAT! I admit the engine sound could be a bit better, but hey for the 4 generation game of NFS what's to expect. You can't compare this game to others, just look at it for what it has in it's own options. Hot Pursuit, Career Mode, Knock Out, Single Player. The best one of all: Career Mode. The repair is very cool, it's fun to beat on the cars and trash the motor and hear it backfire, trash the body and suspention, then go back to the repair shop and watch the car reform (at the price of your winnings). Over all for the 4 level of NFS I give the game 2 thumbs up. Great job NFS.
