Batman Begins was a phenomenal movie. Dark Knight was okay, but there was far too much unnecessary and implied 'disgusting' violence. It's unfortunate that directors feel the need for this type of extreme violence. Probably means their show wouldn't succeed without it. PG13 is certainly not an appropriate rating.

this is not a review of the film but of the sd dvd.
this review is also for those with large format widescreen tvs, if you've got a tube tv or are watching on a computer screen, the film will look acceptable on sd dvd.
the SD DVD of the dark knight has a horribly inconsistent video xfer that adds noise and annoyance to the viewing experience. put in the dvd for 'batman begins' and compare the video transfer to 'the dark knight' ....... ridiculous. the sound is great though, so no complaints there.
did anyone notice how all the pre-release reviews on the internet were for the BLU-RAY version. yes yes yes. the blu-ray looks great. but the SD DVD should not look as baaaad as it does.
some folks are trying to argue that since TDK is almost 3 hours long that it should've been spread over 2 discs. my response is go look at the SD DVD of 'there will be blood', essentially the same length as TDK. but 'blood' looks fantastic on sd dvd
so it is up to you to decide what warner brothers has done. this whole debacle reminds me of how bad the 'pirates of the carr....' dvds looked. but whammy, out come the blu-rays, and they're SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better.
give me a break.
see other reviews for those annoyed with the 'extra features'
frankly the bare minimum is to AT LEAST have a decent transfer of the film on disc.
warners have FAILED miserably .... if you look at this from the consumer's POV.
i'm extra upset because warners has done SUCH a MAGNIFICENT job on such dvds as the recent 'blade runner' 'american in paris' 'gone with the wind' 'adventures of robin hood' ....etc. they've been KNOWN for exceptional transfers. which makes what 'happened' to the dark knight, all the more suspicious .....
buyer beware, or do what the corporation would like you to do .... switch to blu-ray and buy your whole movie collection over again.
ah, sorry. no thank you.

My word... this film really does deliver. The action is intense, the settings are dark and gloomy, the cinematics are fast and slick... but when push comes to shove, the shove that brings this film over the top is characterization.
Christian Bale delivers another solid performance, as does the seemingly eternal Michael Caine. Aaron Eckhart is perfectly cast as Two-Face, with earnest Mr. Smith Goes To Washington written all over him until things turn sour. Maggie Gyllenhaal strikes the right combination of romantic and remote, Gary Oldman plays a haunted Commissioner Gordon... and then there's Heath Ledger.
Forget all the hype and the inevitable backlash to the hype. Heath Ledger is the best Joker the screen has ever seen. I'm going to go ahead and call him the best Joker, film or page, of all time. He owns the role. His performance takes the entire film a level beyond. Yes, I am most fulsome in my praise. But he is that good.
Well worth the viewing.

...and let`s talk specifically about the DVD
I love the movie and i would pretty much buy any cool merchandise about it, but that`s not the case
I got this 2 disc special edition, and i can say i feel pretty ripped off
This is sure 2 disc, but in no way "special" or collector driven
They`re selling the bluray and the DVD as the same thing, with the same cover, but they`re not, which doesn`t mean the bluray version is awesome and full of features, just that the dvd version is really, really cheap.
The first disc comes with the movie and nothing more, nada, no audio commentary whatsoever
On the second disc we get the imax scenes (which i saw on imax theater and was truly amazed, at home they just feel full screen)
A 18 part feature about the movie gets cut down to 2 in the dvd (one is actually 2 or 3 from the bluray compiled) but they are about 6 to 10 minutes each, they are pretty interesting, but even all the 18 in the bluray are not more then 1 hour to watch.
The other features in the extras disc(which come on the second bluray disc) are pretty much content that were already all over the internet when the movie came out: the gotham tonight news, two documentaries from History channel and a gallery with trailers and posters (tv spots, production stills, concept art and the joker cards added to the bluray). And that`s about it, you never see the actors out of their roles talking about the movie and neither anything about Ledger`s incredible work on the Joker. Oh yeah, and they spend some disc space on your digital copy.
As much as it`s pretty clear that Warner is trying to make you get the bluray version by cutting down the features on the dvd, the bluray version is not really special either as it comes with what a regular 2 disc dvd would come.
I obviously can`t say for sure, but i would assume that warner is probably preparing another (ultimate) version to make you spend more money after you buy this for Christmas.
I know if you are a Batman fan as i am, this will not stop you from buying the dvd nor the bluray (which i also did) just know that you are getting into a piece of marketing practice very, very dark indeed.

The Dark Knight will soon be out, but there's no need to wait for the Xmas rush to see what people think about this movie, and chances are everyone has seen this except for my dad. But anyways, The Dark Knight, the successful sequel to Batman Begins is a good bit of movie. Although much of it gets a little muddled up by the failure that is the moral dilemma that Bruce Wayne/Batman faces. But the only thing that has to be said about this movie that makes it worth the purchase is Heath Ledger as the Joker. That's all you need to know, Heath Ledger's last memorable roll since I don't think that other movie he was making before his death won't be anything but someones poor joke over why the man killed himself. This movie should've actually been called The Joker, since the entire movie revolves on the clown prince's plan to discredit, villafy and make Batman what the Joker is, a mad exaggeration and extreme of what humanity is. Sadly, the movie itself suffers greatly from a poor script for Bruce Wayne and Batman, Batman's great moral issue comes to ahead with nothing more then a bunch of tears and maybe a little hissy fit, it detracted from the intensity that the subject matter could've taken especially with the powerhouse performance that Ledger put out.
Essentially, all the characters are the same except for the new addition of Harvey Dent aka Two-Face, blech, and the Joker, yippee. Alfred Pennyworth is still spouting out his bland, British words of encourage about when the hero comes the world is alright, or when a man loves a woman. Gary Oldman, Commissioner Gordon is more or less one dimensional, as is every crime boss in the movie. Essentially the problems with the original movies that dealt with Batman will be repeated the series just stinks of that fact, the success of The Dark Knight assures us of another sequel, and hopefully it is not the case but chances are it will be. And basically this movie is saved and carried by Heath Ledger and his Joker.
