This is the darker Joni Mitchell at work - the one who doesn't hesitate to call a spade a spade and who paints us a warning sign with this collection of some of her more misunderstood work. The songs are all from the '80s and '90s and fans unfamiliar with Joni's adventurous musical undertakings during these decades may be surprised by the deepened voice and somewhat cynical lyrics that are so apart from the willowy optimism of her earliest recordings. Still, the songs she has chosen here are remarkably poignant in today's ecologically-challenged, politically-strained times. Some songs penned twenty years ago resonate with brilliant relevance today. Joni's artwork in the sleeve is utterly beautiful - lush, Canadian forests and landscapes rendered with a magical playfulness. This is a must for any true Joni fan and an intriguing introduction to Mitchell's oft-neglected work for those who are new to her music.
