Excellent Buy! March 21, 2010 Mr. David J. Thorpe (United Kingdom) I have been an amateur photographer for a short while and must say this book is invaluable to anyone new to the world of SLR Digital photography. I have found it so useful and my photography has come on in leaps and bounds. From what to shot to how to shot it, and most importantly some very helpful tips for using photoshop to get the real best from your pictures. 10/10 excellent value!
Love it! March 15, 2010 Eugenio (The Netherlands) Great book. Each page has one concept with a picture, so it's easy to "see" what the author explains.
This is not a technical book, it's a hands-on book that will teach you how to set your camera to get the shot you want.
he Digital Photography Book: The Step-by-step Secrets for How to Make Your Photos Look Like the Pros'! March 14, 2010 Michael Mayhew (UK) This is a very very good book for those looking for a straightforward book on how to take photos.
Good but no cigar !!. March 12, 2010 D. GILLETT I've been trying to find a good book to help me understand & to ultimately improve my photography for a while, I've bought several camera specific books, general photography books, books on aviation, landscape & wildlife photography and I've even got a few out of the library.
I don't want a book that needs another book to explain exactly what it's saying, sadly most authors seem incapable of getting what is essentially a simple message across, while others seem more interested in concentrating on post processing with the likes of Photoshop or just on showcasing how wonderful their photo's are, leaving us to guess what F stop etc was used.
So i bought this book having read the reviews here, and have to say yes it is a good book and on the whole it does help you understand the basics of photography and more importantly does help you get better shots. It also would appear to be updated, as the Nikon D90 & Canon 50d are featured "A LOT".
Sadly the pathetically unfunny American humour (never met a funny yank yet), which runs thru the book grates after a while fast becoming tedious to say the least, it's quite clear Mr Kelby is a great photographer and author however given that he has written so many books, I am sure his wacky and insanely funny comments would be best served in an "All American Photo" joke book, rather than a serious aid to those that "just" want to learn and to improve their photography. If i wanted a joke book I'd have bought a joke book !!!!!.
Problem No 2, despite being a professional it seems that the quite openly biased Mr Kelby fails to realise that life does'nt revolve around Nikon, Canon & Epson. How about instead of saying "it's this setting on a Nikon & that on a Canon", why not have just one camera and talk generically, after all if you remove the badge are'nt they all a like ?. Is a mid range Nikon really any better than other cameras in the same price range; NO. Do all mid range cameras practically have the same features; YES. I would either like to see an UNBRANDED camera or for every other major make to be featured, e.g it's this setting for a Canon, Nikon, Sony, Oly & Pentax etc.
There are 2 other books in the series apparently, which I won't buy for these reasons:
Probably More pathetic humour.
Probably More Brand Biase
probably more Needless Adverts
Financial Exploitation (why produce 3 books when one combined book, with NO humour would have made more sense, who's going to carry 3 books ?).
So a missed opportunity and my effort to find the best photography book continues, should Mr Kelby combine all 3 books in one and remove any signs of humor and biase then that would most defintely be the book to buy.
easy to use March 11, 2010 S. Haresign (Nottingham) This book is as everyone says. It is straight to the point enerally, tells you what you need to do to get the shot. Although I have to say there is a lot of space wasted in this guy being a smart arse and write paragraph after paragraph about how he has fooled you with a smart alec title of suggestion, half of one page is wasted by making up a reason for calling shots tack sharp which is a waste of time me reading it, Yeah ok, introduce yourself as a bit of a joker, but get on with it, leave it out eventually.
The book is useful for not forgetting the basics though when you want a particular shot and good advice for buying stuff. If you like the style then I would say dont buy any other books just buythe series and use them as future refernce as well.
